Volunteers of America Western Washington Meaningful Day Program 2802 Broadway Everett WA 98201 (425) 259-3191 |
The Meaningful Day Program is available for adults with developmental disabilities Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Our schedule changes day to day to accommodate those who can only come 1-2 days per week. Our mission to create our Meaningful Day Program is to empower a higher quality of life for those who live with intellectual disabilities. Studies show that those who stay active throughout their life, even after retirement tend to be healthier; those who socialize more often tend to be happier than those who don't. This is why our Meaningful Day Program is absolutely vital to the intellectually disabled population. Employment for disabled adults can be hard to find and unstable. Our program provides activities to stimulate minds and stay active. About 70% of disabled adults are unemployed, with little hope of becoming employed, but it is still important to build skills. This is why it's so important to have alternative day activities, in addition to the typical 4-12 hour work week for this population. Social skills are something we continuously learn throughout our life, but without the opportunity to do so it can be a hard skill to foster. Statistically those who do any form of art, whether it's coloring, painting, or sculpting have lower blood pressure than those who don't. All of this effort is to avoid isolation, which can be detrimental to individual growth and development. After having the Meaningful Day Program open for 2 years we have seen tremendous personal growth among our clients, as well as behavioral issues subsiding. Scholarships available upon request. |
