Participants of the NewCourtland LIFE Program never have to worry that their inability to pay will prevent them from receiving the care they need as the NewCourtland LIFE Program provides coverage for prescription drugs, doctor care, transportation, home care, check ups, hospital visits, and even nursing home care whenever necessary. For individuals who qualify, Medicare and Medicaid will pay for the member's care. Most members who have both Medicare and Medicaid pay nothing for the program. In other cases, members pay for a part of their care or all of their care if they pay privately. |

For over 40 years, Intercommunity Action, Inc. (Interact) has provided assistance to help people live successfully in the community. Interact was established in 1969 as a private, not-for-profit community agency designed to meet the human services needs of the residents of the Andorra, Roxborough, Manayunk, Wissahickon, East Falls, and Nicetown neighborhoods of Northwest Philadelphia. While most of our services are located in these neighborhoods, today we serve residents across Philadelphia and in the suburbs as well. Interact helps people with intellectual and developmental disabilities develop the skills necessary for daily life through its Activity Center located in the Manayunk section of Philadelphia. Our day services program operates Monday through Friday from 8am-4pm. A minimum of one direct service worker for every six participants is present at all times while participants are in the Center. Community integrated activities are offered in smaller groups with closer supervision. People who attend the Activity Center come from a variety of residential living arrangements – some live at home with their families while others live in community homes supported by Interact or by other provider agencies. While most of the people who receive services at our Activity Center live in Northwest Philadelphia, attendance is open to all who are approved for these state-funded services. |

The LIFE Program promotes independence and the highest level of functioning while allowing choice and dignity for our members and their families. LIFE follows the national PACE Model (Program of All-inclusive Care for the Elderly), which has a 30 year track record of successfully helping elderly individuals remain in their homes and communities. LIFE provides this same level of commitment to assisting members to remain in the community. Programs Employing People (PEP) provides education, recreation, and job placement services to people who have intellectual disabilities. PEP is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in 1969 by a group of women who started a sumer day camp for their children with disabilities. Over the years PEP has grown to provide a wide range of programs. Mission: Provide vocational training and integrated community employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities; Develop and improve understanding among people with intellectual disabilities, their families and the community; Provide adult day activities, and social and recreational opportunities; Utilize all available resources to provide educational, vocational and social supports to individuals and their families. Intellectual disabilities or mental retardation are terms used when a person has certain limitations in mental functioning and in skills such as processing information, communicating, taking care of him or herself, and social behavior. These limitations can range from mild to severe. PEP serves nearly 300 people each year in Philadelphia and nearby suburbs. According to the Arc, up to 3% of Americans have mental retardation. People with disabilities lack employment, transportation, social opportunities, adequate income and education, 2 to 3 times more often that people without disabilities according to the National Organization on Disabilities Survey on Americans with Disabilities 2004. In spite of limitations, people with intellectual disabilities have great capabilities in many areas and PEP strives to encourage and strengthen these capabilities. We match individuals with activities and employment that fit their abilities, needs, and interests. PEP's qualified and dedicated staff members do this with individual attention to each person. |
