PEP is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization that was founded in 1969 by a group of women who started a sumer day camp for their children with disabilities. Over the years PEP has grown to provide a wide range of programs. Mission: Provide vocational training and integrated community employment opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities; Develop and improve understanding among people with intellectual disabilities, their families and the community; Provide adult day activities, and social and recreational opportunities; Utilize all available resources to provide educational, vocational and social supports to individuals and their families. Intellectual disabilities or mental retardation are terms used when a person has certain limitations in mental functioning and in skills such as processing information, communicating, taking care of him or herself, and social behavior. These limitations can range from mild to severe. PEP serves nearly 300 people each year in Philadelphia and nearby suburbs. According to the Arc, up to 3% of Americans have mental retardation. People with disabilities lack employment, transportation, social opportunities, adequate income and education, 2 to 3 times more often that people without disabilities according to the National Organization on Disabilities Survey on Americans with Disabilities 2004. In spite of limitations, people with intellectual disabilities have great capabilities in many areas and PEP strives to encourage and strengthen these capabilities. We match individuals with activities and employment that fit their abilities, needs, and interests. PEP's qualified and dedicated staff members do this with individual attention to each person.
