OFI-NOVA 20 H STREET SAN RAFAEL CA 94901 (415) 721-7772 |
Opportunity for Independence (OFI) was incorporated in 1991 when its founder rented a home in San Rafael, hired one other staff person, and provided residential service and supports to four gentlemen with developmental disabilities who had previously resided in California's Developmental Centers. Over the course of the next decade, OFI developed five additional residential and vocational programs for hundreds of adults with developmental and other cognitive disabilities throughout Marin County. Today, we stand by a philosophy to continue developing individualized programs that improve the quality of life for people with developmental disabilities. We are committed to creating opportunities that assure a dignified lifestyle, access to the full range of natural supports provided by the community, and the freedom to express individual potential and values. NOVA opened its doors in February 1997 as a day program for individuals who were not ready to join our STEP program. However, these participants still enjoy access to the community for social, recreational, community safety, and vocational training. Our NOVA program: Is a premier behavioral program that teaches behavior management skills and assists our participants in learning social skills for success in their community; Utilizes the guidance of a licensed Behavioral Psychologist, who teaches our skills instructors techniques and tools that reduce the occurrence of maladaptive behaviors and encourage the teaching of replacement skills; Is a site-based day program serving individuals age 22 and older; Teaches job readiness skills on an individual basis; Encourages and models appropriate social and interpersonal skills; Offers a variety of social and recreational experiences; Is operated by a 1:3 staffing ratio; Has a strong behavioral component, which emphasizes a reduction in maladaptive conduct |
