This program provides a creative outlet and small business experience for individuals to develop their artistic skills, independent living, communication and public social skills. Additionally, Made in Paradise operates a gift shop to display and sell products created in the program’s classes, as well as from other WTC programs. A wide variety of art classes take place throughout the program day—ceramics, painting/drawing and fine art, fabric arts, stained glass, glass art, jewelry making, mosaic, etc. The program also develops the skills of running a small business, including managing inventory, pricing, handling money, customer relations, displaying products, cleaning and maintaining the gift shop, and work area, etc. The participants are also involved in community activities which include visiting art galleries, museums and art supply stores to gather inspiration and supplies. Services are provided on a one staff to four participant ratio. Made in Paradise serves persons with developmental disabilities who demonstrate a desire to be an artist and run a small business; are able to care for personal needs throughout the program day, but may need some assistance with transfers from wheelchair; are able to attend regularly with minimal support in the areas of behavioral issues, personal and/or nursing care; and are at least 18 years of age. |

COVE II 565 PEARSON ROAD PARADISE CA 95969 (530) 877-5262 |
Community Opportunity for Vocational Experience (C.O.V.E) is our day program for people with autism or other mental disabilities. COVE is well known for its Snoezelen (or controlled multisensory stimulation) recreation building on Pearson Road in Paradise, California. The building is used for people with mental disabilities, and involves exposing them to a soothing and stimulating environment, the “snoezelen roomâ€. These rooms are specially designed to deliver stimuli to various senses, using lighting effects, color, sounds, music, scents, etc. The building interior was designed by Kijeong Jeon, a Chico State University associate professor of art after he researched behavioral studies and conducted interviews with people involved or afflicted with autism. There are three rooms: a main sensory room, a quiet room (called the “pink roomâ€) and a computer lab. Much of it is filled with “snoezelen†(pronounced SNOO-ze-len), which is a Dutch term that refers to the lighting effects, colors, sounds, music and even scents used to expose people with mental disabilities to both soothing and stimulating environments. |
