Details: Community Opportunity for Vocational Experience (C.O.V.E) is our day program for people with autism or other mental disabilities. COVE is well known for its Snoezelen (or controlled multisensory stimulation) recreation building on Pearson Road in Paradise, California. The building is used for people with mental disabilities, and involves exposing them to a soothing and stimulating environment, the “snoezelen roomâ€. These rooms are specially designed to deliver stimuli to various senses, using lighting effects, color, sounds, music, scents, etc. The building interior was designed by Kijeong Jeon, a Chico State University associate professor of art after he researched behavioral studies and conducted interviews with people involved or afflicted with autism.There are three rooms: a main sensory room, a quiet room (called the “pink roomâ€) and a computer lab. Much of it is filled with “snoezelen†(pronounced SNOO-ze-len), which is a Dutch term that refers to the lighting effects, colors, sounds, music and even scents used to expose people with mental disabilities to both soothing and stimulating environments.
