Chugiak Senior Citizens Inc 22424 N. Birchwood Lp. Chugiak AK 99567 (907) 688-2691 |
Chugiak Senior Citizens, Inc. (CSCI), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was incorporated in 1975 for the purpose of fulfilling the Older Americans Act of 1965, for citizens 55 years or older living in the Chugiak-Eagle River area. CSCI serves as the Management Corporation for the Chugiak-Eagle River Senior Center (CERSC), Chugiak Senior Housing, Inc. (CSHI) and related senior support programs. The organization is managed by an all-volunteer eleven-member Board of Directors elected by the membership. A community building built by local pioneers in the1940s served as the initial senior center. Situated on a 7-acre parcel of land purchased from another neighborhood non-profit organization, the Chugiak Benefit Association, the senior center quickly grew in response to the overwhelming community needs. Initially, the Center existed solely on community and member donations of cash and food. In 1976, a needs survey revealed that a large number of area seniors were not able to access health care or perform necessary functions due to the lack of transportation and assistance. Many were found to be isolated in the winter months. With the help of the Municipality of Anchorage and with grants from the State of Alaska and private donations, Chugiak-Eagle River Senior Center has grown to a facility that is over 100,000 sq ft and consistently meets the needs of seniors living in our service area and many of those seniors living in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. We provide a variety of programs for residents and area seniors, including senior housing, an assisted living program, an adult day services program, a dining facility serving breakfast and lunch to residents and the public, Meals-on-Wheels to homebound seniors and disabled adults, activities, events, room rentals, exercise classes, art classes, bingo, computer lab for seniors, preventative health nurse and a visiting professionals program which rotates specialists in numerous fields to provide onsite services. Adult Day Service (ADS) is a structured, comprehensive, nonresidential program which provides a variety of health, social, and related support services in a protective setting. ADS provides services to adults who are physically frail and those suffering from Alzheimer disease and other dementias, as well as adults with brain injuries and individuals over eighteen years of age who face the challenges of a developmental disability. |
