Beacon Health and Social Services, Inc. (BHSS), is a not-for-profit corporation whose mission is to provide the newest healthcare and social service choices for elders living in Monmouth County. The Beacon of LIFE center was established to deliver PACE (Program of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly) services. The PACE model is centered on the belief that it is better for the well-being of seniors with chronic care needs and their families to be served in the community whenever possible. Under PACE, participants must receive all needed health care, including primary care and specialist physician services (other than emergency services) from the PACE organization or from an entity authorized by the PACE organization. PACE participants may be fully and personally liable for the costs of unauthorized or out-of-PACE services. Emergency services are covered.

Elwyn New Jersey’s Senior Enrichment program provides adult day care services for older adults with disabilities on the grounds of Elwyn New Jersey in Vineland, New Jersey. Daily activities are included within the day program building and through activities in the surrounding community. Senior Enrichment is a therapeutic program. It provides a variety of engaging activities on a daily basis. Individuals accepted to the program must quality for services under the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities (NJ-DDD) and be able to benefit from the type of therapeutic programming and activities provided at the Senior Enrichment program. Although the individuals attending the program are elderly and choose to no longer attend a more vocational or work-centered adult day service, the daily activities at Senior Enrichment are engaging and fun. Based on individual needs and wants, individuals can participate in activities in the community, including going out to lunch, going shopping at the mall, or even going to the flea market for interesting finds. Staff at Senior Enrichment work as a team and truly care about every individual attending the program. Trained instructors are responsible for different program areas and aspects of the Senior Enrichment adult day care service program. While staff and individuals supported in each area are working on a specific theme or activity, individualized attention is provided by staff to all participants. Individualized attention has been noted as one of the benefits of the Senior Enrichment program according to family and guardian feedback. Senior Enrichment’s adult day care service includes daily variety of fun-filled activities. Some enjoy reading, or being read to while others enjoy discussing current events. Individuals are engaged and can choose to participate in movie days, bingo, and many different table top games. Holidays are celebrated with bright decorations adorning the walls, and individual birthdays are also celebrated with those who wish to participate. Empowering individuals to make their own decisions is important. Some individuals have specific games they choose to play, like bingo or Trouble. A variety of board games are available. At Senior Enrichment, not a day goes by without music. Walking through the halls at Senior Enrichment, you can hear folks sing along to the music on the radio, chatting about what they have planned for the evening during lunch, or see folks taking a break in a recliner or at the table before moving on to the next activity. Especially in the beautiful spring and summer weather, individuals supported through Senior Enrichment’s adult day care services take part in outdoor activities such as whiffle ball, kick ball and shopping trips for which vehicles are available for transportation. Elwyn New Jersey’s CATC provides an adult day care option for individuals with disabilities. CATC is an Adult Training Center (ATC) located in Cumberland County, New Jersey. It is located at 1667 East Landis Avenue in Vineland, on the ground of Elwyn New Jersey. Individuals accepted to the CATC program must be 21 or older, quality for services under the New Jersey Division of Developmental Disabilities (NJ-DDD) and be able to benefit from the type of programming and activities provided at the CATC adult day care program. Individuals who attend CATC function at a lower level of ability, requiring all activities to be completed with hand over hand assistance. The CATC staff work with individuals on basic living skills. These skill activities include learning hygiene self-help skills related to toileting and washing. Other adult daily living skills activities worked on at CATC include taking one’s lunch out of the lunch bag and eating lunch with as little assistance as possible which, in most cases, includes hand over hand assistance. Individuals participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor activities. The various program rooms at CATC are arranged to support smaller groups so that each instructors can work more closely with each individual to provide the care and support that he or she needs. Most individuals are non-verbal, so CATC staff are highly tuned to each individual’s way to expressing him or herself. Music appreciation is one of the activities that many individuals attending the program enjoy. Some individuals like to watch a specific cartoon, finding interest in the bright and colorful drawings and movement of the characters. CATC individuals are involved in participating in their community. Trips include going to the zoo to see the animals while strolling through, going to the neighborhood park, or feeding the ducks at the pond or lake in the neighborhood. Vehicles are available for transportation on community trips. Many individuals enjoy taking a ride in the vehicle to see the holiday decorations or to just watch cars and pedestrians.

ADAPT is a program specializing in providing adult day care services to individuals with disabilities, complex physical challenges and medical needs. The program is located at 1667 East Landis Avenue, on the grounds of Elwyn New Jersey in Vineland, New Jersey. Individuals supported at ADAPT function at a lower level of ability in general, so most of the activities are completed providing hand over hand assistance to the individual. The program includes Assistive technology, Developmental activities, Augmentative communication, Person-centered planning, and Therapeutic intervention which is how it got its name, ADAPT. The primary goal of the ADAPT adult day care service program is to provide each individual with the support and training he or she needs to live as independently as possible and to gain increasing control over their environment. Daily activities provide sensory stimulation, therapeutic positioning and range of motion exercises to improve physical strength and flexibility for improved functional use. Professional support services available at ADAPT include a Licensed Practical Nurse on site eight hours every day and a Physical Therapist on site four times per week. Individuals can receive a PT assessment and individualized PT programming which can occur at ADAPT or which can be generalized for daily activities at home. Programming at ADAPT can include positioning on a mat, with or without wedges, sitting up or laying on the side, depending on the program developed by the Physical Therapist. Wheelchairs used by individuals can be ordered, fitted and serviced at ADAPT if so order by the individual’s physician. Individuals who attend Elwyn New Jersey’s ADAPT also have access to community professional supports and training. The nurse at ADAPT supports individuals by tracking blood pressure, weight, bowel movement and other ordered tracking as well as providing g-tube feeding and trach cleaning for those who require it. The adult day care service programming at ADAPT includes visual, auditory, and tactile stimulation. Staff work with individuals hand-over-hand on goals including personal hygiene and grooming skills, social and adaptive living skills, practice and improving on communication skills and the use of assistive technology equipment. Staff help individuals play hanging volley ball, rolling a ball, and other activities which help individuals’ movement through carefully scripted range of motion activities. Staff also work with individuals on fine and gross motor skills training by using arts and crafts as the method. The ADAPT adult day care service program also provides a touch screen computer with Intelli key or switch plate accessibility for individuals to work on communication and finger dexterity. Adult day care service activities at ADAPT also include board games and storybook activities. In addition, the trained program staff work to provide safe opportunities for participation in activities in the community. ADAPT staff look forward to working with individuals in planning for and providing coordinated special trips to attend movies and to experience places like the local mall or park or even the boardwalk.

Our Adult Day Center, Alzheimer’s Respite Program, offers social interaction and allows our clients to get their life back. Dementia takes a heavy toll and can leave a once vital, active person just staring at a television. Becoming part of a community again can make all the difference for both the client and the caregiver. The Tender serves clients age 60 and over or anyone of any age living with Alzheimer’s disease/related dementia. Clients typically enjoy two to five days a week, from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm, at our facility at Mt. Laurel, NJ. Our activities include guided exercise, discussions, sing-a-longs, games including bingo, cards, bowling, basketball, volleyball, shuffleboard, and skee ball. A snack and hot lunch are also served daily. There may be grants available to help cover the cost of the program. The Tender is a 501c3 charity and we also ask for donations to help support our programs.

Elwyn New Jersey’s VATC provides adult day care services for individuals with disabilities. The goal of VATC is to engage, train and empower individuals through encouraging them to participate in developing their basic living skills and social skills that maximize their individual growth potentials. This Adult Training Center (ATC) provides learning centers and community opportunities for service involvement in addition to community integration to adults 21 years of age and older in Vineland, New Jersey. The VATC is a fully wheelchair accessible program. The daily schedule at VATC consists of daily exercise in the morning, including aerobics, classroom-based activities, independent guided activities such as reading, use of sensory room, playing board games, arts and crafts, puzzles, and laundry chores or other goal-related chores. Wednesdays have bingo, musical chairs or movies and Fridays include a dance party. Every afternoon, participants learn a new topic on safety. Three basic areas of concentration for programming at VATC includes the development of fine motor skills, the development of gross motor skills and the development of appropriate social interactions. VATC has a sensory room, a personal awareness room, and a number of visual sensory areas. Sensory areas include the Jungle Room and the Sensational Hall where individual program participants can touch a number of tactile items. An indoor park offers sights and sounds with a recycled water fall and the chirping of birds. The indoor park also has benches that fold into a picnic table. Relaxing music is fed into the area, and there is even a three-dimensional desert scene with additional sights and sounds. VATC’s sensory spaces have been built to stimulate the senses. Stimulated senses, in turn, empower individuals and enrich experiences as well as help individuals grow their interests and awareness. VATC also has vehicles for transportation to day trips which are planned to encourage community integration and participation in an on-going service project, including the provision of community service at three local nursing homes. VATC participants have crafted holiday center pieces for the veterans and delivered them. In order to engage individual participants in this adult day care service program, and to empower their potential, staff work with individuals on fine and gross motor skills growth. Carefully developed group activities are provided through nine modules of learning. These include reading, personal awareness, arts and crafts, games, basic living skills, educational videos, group participation and kitchen skills. Additionally, socialization not only allows individuals to strengthen their social skills but it also enhances individuals’ daily experiences. Each individual works toward objectives set by the individual and his or her team. VATC is separated into eleven service areas, each with a six to one individual to staff ratio. Two groups receive a needs-based higher level of supervision provided at a three to one individual served to staff ratio. These areas provide support to individuals with specific needs, including the diagnosis of PICA. Elwyn New Jersey’s VATC focuses on developing an environment that is safe and stimulating to provide an adult day care service to individuals with disabilities. Programming options provide sensory input and techniques which encourage growth. Outcomes focus on opportunities to learn a marketable skill coupled with the ability to function in a social setting. VATC staff proudly work closely with individuals and their teams, including family members, guardians, and other significant people in the person’s life. VATC staff and individuals also work with our community partners who make many community participation events and opportunities possible.

The Arc of Union County’s Day Programs at 70 Diamond Road in Springfield are a good fit for individuals who don’t require extensive medical, behavioral or other intensive supports.
